Dangerous goods 

CEN is developing European Standards to support the safe carriage of dangerous goods. The legal framework is connected to the United Nations system of regulations.

The CEN-CENELEC Management Centre is coordinating the work on 'Transport of Dangerous Goods' with the help of a CEN consultant.

Technical bodies and activities

Over 200 European standards are referred currently in the UN legislation.
 

Sector Forum

A sector Forum is a platform aiming at facilitating the exchange of information between the different stakeholders, coordinating and identifying the standardization needs in a specific field of CEN Work.
 
There is no active platform in the sector, however in the past a platform (CEN BT/WG 83) had contributed to the development of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

European legislation and mandates

European Standards are developed in the context of European legislation and sometimes come in direct support to particular Directives or Regulations.
 
EU Directives
There are two Directives governing the technical work in this area:
  • Directive 2008/68/EC on the inland transport of dangerous goods;
  • Directive 2010/35/EU on transportable pressure equipment;
Mandates
 
There is only one Mandate covering the standardization work in this area:
  • M/086 Transport of Dangerous Goods (pdf format).

Harmonized European Standards

There are no harmonized standards in the sense of the 'New Approach' in this domain.
