CEN Technical Committee, which work is related to the solar's field:
A Sector Forum is a platform aiming at facilitating the exchange of information between the different stakeholders, coordinating and identifying the standardization needs in a specific field of CEN work.
Some of the existing CEN and CENELEC Sector Fora relevant to the activities of thermal solar systems are:
The European Standards developed in this area support European legislation and policies regarding the promotion of renewable energy sources. Some of them have also been developed following a specific request, a Mandate, from the European Commission.
According to some estimates, solar thermal energy will provide 3.6 % of the total demand of the EU's 28 Member States for heating and cooling. The European Standards in this area support the development of solar thermal energy by helping to provide economies of scale, ensuring quality and helping to reduce testing costs.
Some of the standards being developed will also support the implementation of the Eco-design Directive (2009/125/EC)
(pdf format) and, more concretely, the implementing measures in relation to boilers and combi-boilers (ENER Lot 1) and water heaters and storage tanks (ENER Lot 2).
Some of the standardization work under CEN/TC 312 Thermal solar systems and components is done within the framework of specific standardization Mandates received from the European Commission.
- M/369 amending Mandate M/129 on Space heating appliance and energy capturing appliances
- M/495 relating to harmonized standards in the field of Ecodesign
