Measuring instruments allow accuracy of measurement – water meters, gas meters, electricity meters, etc. - and play an increasingly more significant role in today's society, by raising the industry and consumers' awareness on their actual consumption and making them more environmentally responsible. In the field of measurement, CEN develops standardization deliverables for heat, gas, and water meters, whereas the electricity sector is covered by CENELEC. These activities partially support the Directive 2014/32/EU on Measuring Instruments (MID) on the one hand and on the other hand, the EU policies on smart meters and smart grids.
CEN and CENELEC also undertake the standardization activities related to laboratory equipment. To a great extent, the work is carried out in cooperation with the corresponding international standardization bodies of ISO and IEC respectively.
Furthermore, CEN produces the standards and other documents dedicated to lasers and photonics, as well as on means of measuring and/or recording temperature in the cold chain.
