Summary:

In the context of the Memorandum of Understanding between the three European Standardization Organizations (CEN, CENELEC, ETSI) and the Gulf Standardization Organization (GSO), and the CEN-CENELEC Task Force Gulf created in 2018, CEN and CENELEC are organizing, with the support of GSO, two back-to-back workshops:

  • Workshop 1: 17 February 2020 – The Gulf Technical Regulation on Low Voltage Equipment and Appliances
  • Workshop 2: 18 February 2020 – The Gulf Technical Regulation on Children Toys

Expected outcomes of the Low Voltage Equipment and Appliances Workshop are to:

  • reach a better understanding of the regulatory and standardization systems in the Gulf region;
  • identify the differences and similarities between the EU Low Voltage Directive and the Gulf technical regulation on Low Voltage Electrical Equipment and Appliances, and related supporting standards;
  • agree on recommendations, including timeframe and milestones, with a view to facilitate market access to European economic operators and to increase technical alignment and trade between the two regions.

Expected outcomes of the Toys Safety Workshop are to:

  • reach a better understanding of the regulatory and standardization systems in the Gulf region;
  • review the differences and similarities between the EU Toys Safety Directive and the Gulf technical regulation on Children Toys, and related supporting standards;
  • review existing issues related to the placing of toys onto the Gulf market, and to the evolution of the Gulf conformity assessment rules (including at national level)
  • agree on recommendations, including timeframe and milestones, with a view to facilitate market access to European economic operators and to increase technical alignment and trade between the two regions.

The format of the two workshops will consist of :

  • a series of presentations addressing the different aspects of these Gulf technical regulations and related supporting standards;
  • discussions as well as feedback from the participants on their experiences of the differences and similarities between the Gulf and the European systems;
  • recommendations to potentially enhance regulatory convergence between the Gulf region and Europe and technical alignment between GSO and CEN and CENELEC.
