The EN 1279 series was developed by CEN/TC 129 and published on 25 July 2018. The standards cover the requirements for insulating glass units. Insulating glass units offer thermal and sound insulation, and therefore they are widely used in a lot of commercial and residential buildings: their main use consists of installations in windows, doors, curtain walling, and bonded glazing for doors, windows and curtain walling, roofs and partitions.
EN 1279-1 ‘Glass in Building - Insulating glass units - Part 1: Generalities, system description, rules for substitution, tolerances and visual quality’ provides definitions for insulating glass units and covers the rules for system descriptions, their optical and visual quality and dimensional tolerances, and sets the substitution rules based on an existing system description. The achievement of this standard’s requirements indicates that insulating glass units fulfil the needs for intended use and ensures, by means of the evaluation of conformity, that visual, energetic, acoustic, and safety parameters do not change significantly over time.
Secondly, EN 1279-5 ‘Glass in Building - Insulating glass units - Part 5: Product standard’ establishes a product standard for insulating glass units for use in buildings. The document was prepared under a mandate given to CEN by the European Commission and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). When EN 1279-5 is cited in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU), under Regulation (EU) No. 305/2011, it will be possible to use it as a basis for the establishment of Declarations of Performance (DoP) and CE marking. EN 1279-5 gives provisions for determining the characteristics of insulating glass units, including reaction to fire, resistance to fire, bullet resistance and explosion resistance, together with protection against noise and thermal properties.
Finally, EN 1279-2, EN 1279-3 and EN 1279-4 are supporting test methods and requirements for, respectively, (1) moisture penetration, (2) gas leakage rate and gas concentration tolerances and (3) physical attributes of edge seals and inserts for insulating glass units.
These EN 1279 series were developed by CEN TC 129, whose Technical Secretariat is held by NBN, the Belgian standardisation body.
