CEN Environmental approach
The key objective of the "CEN approach on address environmental issues in Product and Services standards" is to put in place a general framework to promote and ensure a better inclusion of environmental aspects in European Standards.
It has been adopted by CEN/BT as a guidance document in March 2010 and applies to all CEN Technical Committees.

Integration of environmental Aspects into European Standardization
The 6th Environment Action Programme 'Environment 2002-2012: Our Future, Our Choice' calls for the integration of environmental aspects into standardization as a way to promote sustainable production and consumption patterns.
The EC Communication
COM(2004) 130 "Integration of Environmental Aspects into European Standardization" is a response to the Programme as it underlines the need for European Standardisation Organizations to make this a reality.
The Communication invites the European standardization system and its stakeholders to reflect and act on the following main issues:

To widen and deepen the process of the integration of environmental aspects into the standardization process;

To set priorities in work programs and mandates;

To facilitate the participation of all stakeholders;

To further develop and systematically use tools.
