Joint CEN, CENELEC and ETSI Activity on Standards for Smart Grids
On 1 March 2011, the European Commission issued Mandate M/490 requesting the three European Standards Organisations (ESOs), CEN, CENELEC and ETSI, "to develop a framework to enable European Standardisation Organisations to perform continuous standard enhancement and development in the field of Smart Grids, while maintaining transverse consistency and promote continuous innovation."
In order to perform the requested work, the ESOs conbined their strategic approach and established in July 2011, together with the relevant stakegolders, the CEN-CENELEC-ETSI Smart Grid Coordination Group (SG-CG), being responsible for coordinating the ESOs reply to M/490 (successor of the JWG on standards for smart grids which developed the Recommendations for smart grid standardization in Europe).
Smart Grid Coordination Group report
A main group, the Smart Grid Coordination Group, and 4 working groups, all working under the responsibility of the main group:
- Working Group Reference Architecture
- Working Group First Set of Standards
- Working Group Sustainable Processes
- Working Group Security
In 2012, the above-mentioned working groups worked intensively to produce reports (approved by the CEN and CENELEC Technical Boards in December 2012 and by ETSI Board in January 2013) which are available on the CEN-CENELEC website.
Link with other mandates
M/490 requires the work to build on already existing material delivered through other mandates such as M/441 (smart metering) and M/468 (charging of electric vehicles).
