How Standards and labels contribute to reaching Energy Efficiency Targets

Standards and labels support SMEs and industries in the implementation of energy management, contribute to achieve the considerable energy saving potential of buildings and assist municipalities in defining energy efficiency strategies.

12 April 2011, Mission of Switzerland to the EU, Brussels

The target of 20% reduction in energy consumption by improving energy efficiency is not a legally binding target. Forward-looking initiatives for cities, buildings or industry have been developed; however, doubts are sometimes expressed about the capacity of these voluntary measures to provide incentives to achieve the energy efficiency targets.

The aim of this event was to provide examples of some concrete voluntary initiatives, share experiences and best practice examples, such as the Swiss initiative “Cité de l’Energie”and the “European Energy Award”, or standards in the area of energy efficiency developed by CEN and CENELEC.

The seminar presentations can be found in the following web page.

CEN-CENELEC Seminar on 'Energy management and energy efficiency standards'

How European Standards support the improvement and assessment of energy performance
23 March 2010, EFTA Secretariat, Brussels

This seminar was organized within the framework of the EU Sustainable Energy Week and hosted by EFTA (European Free Trade Association).

The seminar  provided an overview of the standardization activities of CEN and CENELEC on energy management and energy efficiency including energy efficiency of buildings, transport, energy audits, energy management systems, energy services,  energy saving calculations, etc. and to offered stakeholders a time of exchange and debate on these topics. Standardization is an important tool for the implementation of the EU energy efficiency and climate policy as standards provide the common methods and practices to assess and improve energy performance. During the seminar there were also some presentations in relation to the practical experiences in the implementation of standards on energy performance of buildings, energy audits and energy management standards.

The seminar presentations can be found on the following web page.
