Cableway installations designed to carry persons

The directive of the European Parliament and of the Council relating to 'cableway installations designed to carry persons' was adopted at the Council meeting in December 1999, and published in the Official Journal of 3 May 2000 under the reference 2000/9/EC.

The European Commission Directorate - Enterprise submitted a standardization mandate to the 98/34/EC Committee for Standards and technical regulations in March 2000. This mandate was approved by all the CEN members at the beginning of July 2000. It aims at supporting the standardization in this field and is based on the revised version of the CEN Technical Committee 242 reply to the programming mandate of 1994.

The consultant to CEN advise the technical committees, particularly CEN/TC 242, 'Safety requirements for passenger transportation by rope', in order to ensure that standards meet the essential requirements of the directive.

Further information on the standardization programme of work supporting the 2000/9/EC Directive is available on the 'new approach' area (this site provides access to lists of European Standards and drafts developed by CEN, CENELEC and ETSI in the context of the new approach of the Single Market).

CEN/TC 242 is working in liaison with OITAF (International Organisation for Transportation by Rope).
