CEN Technical Committees (CEN/TCs) are responsible for the programming and planning of the technical work in the form of a Business Plan, for the monitoring and the execution of the work in accordance with the agreed Business Plan and for the management of the standards making process, including the respect of CEN's policies and the consensus building amongst all interested parties represented through the CEN national members, the CEN Associates and the Affiliates.
Of the numerous Technical Committees operating within CEN today eleven have work programmes in the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) sector and eight of them are represented in the CEN-CENELEC ICT Forum.
Organizes, coordinates and monitors the development of standards (including testing standards) for cards, related device interfaces and operations with special emphasis on inter-industry standardization and on Integrated Circuit Cards, without restriction to payment cards or bank cards.
Standardizes bar code symbologies and has established an appropriate system of registration authorities, and the means to ensure the necessary maintenance of standards.
Standardizes individual and combination devices and systems for automatic control of mechanical building service installations, in particular, for heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems.
Organizes, coordinates and monitors the development of standards, including testing standards in healthcare informatics, as well as the promulgation of these standards. It also deals with the European Commission's Mandate 403 on ehealth interoperability. For this latter, a dedicated web site is maintained by NEN (link). Work on the mandate is currently on hold waiting for European funding.
CEN/TC 278 Road transport and traffic telematics
Works with standardization in the telematics field applied to road traffic and transport, including those elements that need technical harmonization for intermodal operation with other means of transport. It supports activities such as vehicle, container, swap body and goods wagon identification; communication between vehicles and road infrastructure; traffic and parking management, user fee collection, public transport management and user information.
Produces a structured framework of standards and guidelines, which specify a methodology to define, describe and transfer geographic data and services. This work is carried out in close cooperation with ISO/TC 211 in order to avoid duplication of work.
The standards support the consistent use of geographic information throughout Europe in a manner that is compatible with international usage. They support a spatial data infrastructure at all levels in Europe.
CEN/TC 294 Communication systems for meters and remote reading of meters
Deals with communication between meters in the field of metrology, covering also data privacy as inherent property, providing a scalable mechamism for security services, data integrity, authentification and confidetiality. CEN/TC 294 is actively participating in the Smart Meters Coordination Group and Smart Grids Coordination Group.
This work is carried out in close cooperation with CENELEC and ETSI for defining consistent interface definitions as essential condition for achieving interoperability between entities in the systems.
CEN/TC 304 Information and Communication Technologies - European Localization Requirements
Standardization in the field of Information and Communications Technologies, to ensure that European localization requirements can be satisfied. Localization in this context means the provision of software and hardware support adapted to local linguistic and cultural needs in Europe.
Ensures the availability of standards required by industry for the integration of elements of Advanced Manufacturing Technologies (AMT) systems. Standards are required in areas such as enterprise modeling and system architecture, communication, data, information processing, control equipment, human aspects, mechanical aspects and system operational aspects.
Produces standards in the field of information and communication technologies relating to learning, education and training. The Technical Committee focuses on standards for vocabularies and frameworks, quality and competencies.

This work is carried out in close cooperation with the CEN Workshop on Learning Technologies (WS/LT).
This Project Committee is currently developing standards on Internet Content and Communications Filtering Software and Services.
