The 6th Environment Action Programme 'Environment 2010: Our Future, Our Choice' calls for the integration of environmental aspects into standardization as a way to promote sustainable production and consumption patterns.
The EC Communication COM(2004) 130 'Integration of Environmental Aspects into European Standardisation' is a response to the Programme as it underlines the need for European standardisation organizations to make this a reality.
The Communication invites the European standardization system and its stakeholders to reflect and act on the following main issues:

To widen and deepen the process of the integration of environmental aspects into the standardization process;

To set priorities in work programs and mandates;

To facilitate the participation of all stakeholders;

To further develop and systematically use tools.
