Harmonized standards

The European Commission refers to European standards that are produced under a mandate given by the European Commission and/or the European Free Trade Association, and that are adopted by the European Standards Organizations as 'harmonized standards' (hEN). These standards support the essential requirements of a New Approach Directive.

The products manufactured in accordance with harmonized standards benefit from a 'presumption of conformity' to the essential requirements of a specific directive.

Part of the work programme of CEN Technical Committees consists of standards developed in compliance with the Construction Products Directive (CPD) 89/106/EEC following specific mandates. These European standards are then cited in the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU).

The European Commission has recently made available its proposal for a Construction Products Regulation (CPR) and CEN is currently assessing the impact of this regulation on the European standardization system.
