Eurpean Legislation and mandates

European Standards are developed in the context of European legislation.

EU directives

  • Standardization on explosives for civil uses is in support of Union Directive 93/15/EEC.
  • Standards for automotive fuels and a fuel quality monitoring system are linked with
Directive 98/70/EC, which is updated by Directive 2003/17/EC. Activities for biofuels are also linked to Directive 2009/28/EC.
  • Standardization for solid biofuels and solid recovered fuels is in close collaboration with the services of the Commission since it affects the directive for incineration of waste (Directive 2000/76/EC).
  • Standardization activities for pyrotechnic articles support Directive 2007/23/EC on the placing on the market of pyrotechnic articles.

Mandates

  • The Lead Market Initiative inspired standardization activities in the area of bio-based products. Mandate M/429 for the elaboration of a standardization programme for bio-based products also requested a review and identification of already existing standards. The result of the standard analysis has been published as a Technical Report (CEN/TR 16208) in May 2011. Please access the conclusions from the standards analysis here.
