Air travel keeps on growing. In 2008, some 798 million passengers departed from or arrived at European airports. With 8,5 million flights per year and 28.000 flights per day, Europe’s air travel has increased by 50% in the last decade, and is expected to double by 2020. |
Harmonisation of aviation equipment and Air Traffic Management (the study of the available airspace and airports capacity, allowing to consequently adapting the number of movements) are key to secure Europe's airspace and passenger safety in the busy European sky.
CEN has developed a Technical Specification (CEN/TS) 16071 'Interoperability of Flight Data Processing (Air Traffic Control)' that will contribute to maintaining the highest safety levels and allow better functioning of European Air Traffic Management.
Flight Data Processing interoperability between Air Traffic Control (ATC) units is a key element to facilitate and harmonise data exchange and critical to the functioning of a harmonised European Air Traffic Management system.
CEN/TS 16071 was development in close cooperation with EUROCAE, the European Organization for Civil Aviation Equipment. It takes into consideration the Single European Sky Interoperability Regulation as part of the European Union 'Single European Sky' project that strives to tackle air traffic congestion in Europe and to achieve a harmonised Air Traffic Management system.
