CEN reinforces cooperation with the Centre for Standardization and Metrology (CSM) of Kyrgyzstan

Brussels, 8 June 2012 - The European Committee for Standardization (CEN) has decided to strengthen its cooperation with the Centre for Standardization and Metrology (CSM) of Kyrgyzstan, which will officially become a Partner Standardization Body (PSB) of CEN on 1 July 2012.

The Centre for Standardization and Metrology (CSM) of Kyrgyzstan submitted an application for PSB status in March 2012.  This application was formally accepted by the Members of CEN on the occasion of their General Assembly, which was held in Albena (Bulgaria) on 7 June.

As of 1 July 2012, CEN will continue to cooperate with its 3 Partner Standardization Bodies: Standards Australia (SA); the Mongolian Agency for Standardization and Metrology (MASM); and the Centre for Standardization and Metrology (CSM) of Kyrgyzstan.

The cooperation agreement between CEN and CSM will cover several different types of activities, including: exchange of information and organisation of events on topics and issues of mutual interest; participation in technical committees and exchange of standards.

Partner Standardization Bodies (PSBs) are National Standards Bodies that are members of ISO, but are unlikely to become CEN Members or CEN Affiliates for political or geographical reasons.  In order to acquire this status, National Standards Bodies have to meet certain criteria.

Partner Standardization Bodies have the right to participate in the work of CEN. They may attend the General Assembly, and contribute to Technical Committees (TCs) with observer status. When a PSB chooses to participate in a particular TC, it is obliged to accept and implement any European Standards (ENs) that are developed and adopted by the TC concerned.

The Centre for Standardization and Metrology (CSM) of Kyrgyzstan is the official standardization organisation in Kyrgyzstan, and has been a member of ISO since 1995.

CSM has actively started drafting new technical regulations in many areas, while ensuring compatibility with European and international standards wherever possible.
