Session 1 - Energy management
80% of the energy the EU consumes is from fossil fuels - oil, natural gas and coal. Due to the environmental consequences, coupled with security issues and financial implications of this practice, a more rational use and better management of energy has become essential for the sustainable development of our modern society.
How can standardization help companies to better manage energy? Are there any other needs for standardization work?

Session 2 - Greenhouse gases
In recent years, we have seen a number of different commitments that were aimed at reducing the proliferation of greenhouse gases in the air, such as the '20/20' policy targets of the EU. Efforts in achieving this include cutting emissions, balancing them with removal processes or even trapping greenhouse gases before they enter the atmosphere.
The options seem to be broad – how and where can standardization help in the global fight against the increase of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere?

Session 3 - Energy using products directive and its implementation
Reducing the energy consumption of products is key in using energy efficiently. The production, distribution, use and end-of-life management of Energy using Products (EuPs) has a significant effect on the environment, specifically the consequences of energy consumption, use of other materials and resources, waste generation and release of hazardous substances into the environment. It is estimated that more than 80% of all product-related environmental impacts are determined during the design phase of a product.
CENELEC is developing activities to reply to mandate M/341 through standardization activities undertaken by Technical Committee 111X 'Environment', which also represents CENELEC at the EuP Consultation Forum - a forum which allows stakeholders to be informed and contribute to the definition and revision of EuP implementing measures.

Session 4 - Renewable energy sources
Renewable energy sources are part of the answer to the challenge of climate change and sustainable development. In December 2008, the EU institutions adopted the energy and climate package containing a new Renewable Energy Directive, which creates a framework to reach a share of 20% renewable energy sources by 2020.
What are the challenges faced by the renewable industries? How does standardization support the development of renewable energies? What are the standardization needs?

Session 5 - Energy efficiency of buildings
Buildings account for around 40% of Europe's energy consumption and are therefore at the core of the European Union's plans to achieve its energy savings targets. The recast of the Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (2002/91/EC) intends to activate this, and to boost sustainable investments and job creation across Europe. Under a mandate from the European Commission, CEN has produced a set of standards in support of the introduction of the energy performance of buildings directive.
How are energy performance standards used and what will be the standardization needs in the future? What does the recast of the directive imply? How does standardization support the EPBD?

Session 6 - ICT for energy efficiency
The objective of this session is to provide an overview on the current and on-going plans for standards in the scope of ICT for Energy Efficiency where issues like methodologies for measuring energy efficiency and energy savings and smart metering standardization will be discussed. The European Commission has acknowledged that ICT and ICT-based innovations could prove to be the most cost-effective way of achieving the 2020 target. The European Commission seeks to create a policy framework which will support the recognition and exploitation of ICTs' energy-saving potential.
Within this context, how do standardization ICT activities and existing standardization tools bridge the gap between the needs of industry and legislation?
