Background
The formation by CEN of CEN BT/WG 161 'Protection and Security of the Citizen', clearly demonstrates the current feeling that standards activity may help reduce risks to European citizens from a range of hazards.
These include CBRN (Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear), with potential terrorist attacks, but also an increased awareness of natural or man-made accidental disasters and incidents, involving chemical plants, the transportation of chemicals, nuclear products and waste etc.
Europe therefore needs to ensure, in the event of CBRN incidents, whether these emerge within Europe or from outside, the safety of its citizens generally and specifically that of emergency services personnel, security personnel, border control personnel, employees in critical industries (including public utilities – gas, electric and water supplies – the transport industry, essential public administration – national and local - and others).
The provision of a specification for PPE for CBRN hazards will help ensure that suitable equipment is provided for these circumstances.
CEN Workshop Agreement
The Workshop allowed CBRN PPE issues to be discussed and debated in a dedicated environment, with a view to reaching consensus on a CEN Workshop Agreement, in order to facilitate the manufacture of PPE that protects adequately against CBRN hazards.
CEN Workshop status
The Workshop has completed its activities in December 2009 and published:
CWA 16106: PPE for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear, (CBRN) Hazards
