Discover how standards benefit research and innovation

Standardization is not only a key driver of open markets, free trade and interoperability on a global level, but also a key contributor to the EU 2020 Strategy. For companies and researchers, standards can bring considerable economic assets.

Despite the numerous advantages of standardization for research and innovation, standardization can often seem complex, difficult to access, and with too lengthy procedures. But we have the tools to meet each individual need!

Who are we?

CEN  (European Committee for Standardization), CENELEC  (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) and ETSI (European Telecommunications Standards Institute) are the three European Standards Organisations (ESOs). Through Technical Bodies or Committees, they facilitate and allow the development of European Standards.

The close collaboration between CEN and CENELEC was consolidated by the creation of a common CEN-CENELEC Management Centre (CCMC) at the beginning of 2010.

These webpages deal with CEN and CENELEC issues, for ETSI please take a look at their website.

What do we do?

We offer a platform for stakeholders to produce consensus-built documents. A standard is a technical document designed to be used as a rule, guideline or definition. It is a repeatable way of doing something.

Standards are created by bringing together all interested parties such as researchers, manufacturers, consumers, and regulators of a particular material, product, process or service.

CEN and CENELEC

CEN and CENELEC produce European Standards, which are also national standards in our member countries. In addition, CEN and CENELEC produce other technical documents such as CEN or CENELEC Technical Specifications and Workshop Agreements (CWAs). CWAs are often used in fast-evolving technologies and the creation of new markets.
